Personal beliefs are directly related to how we perform and act in our
everyday life. They determine our character and the way we deal with
people and tackle relationships. Personal beliefs and convictions vary from person to
person. They are fostered over a period of time depending on various
factors including the environment we live in, our society and religious
values. Personal beliefs are also influenced by people with whom we
live and meet everyday.
Other factors that contribute to personal beliefs are education and
family background. A child inherits his parents’ beliefs and values.
But as time passes, his education and the people he develops great
esteem for gradually and slowly change his beliefs.
Religion can have a great impact on the way we think and perceive various situations. There is a huge difference between a person who believes in God and another who does not. Their way of handling matters is totally different. Similarly, people who believe in superstitions will keep on doing things the way they like even if you proved that what they think is wrong and cannot happen.
All these beliefs constantly revolve around our lives and determine our course of action. There is a need to clearly define our personal beliefs so that we could stick to them no matter what the circumstances are. You are what you believe in, and therefore to be successful in any field of life, personal or professional, you have got to be persistent in your ideas, beliefs, values and principles.
Although personal beliefs make us the person we are, they can change over time.
For example, when you are growing up you may think your parents’ beliefs are not in agreement with your education or the way you perceive life. So, you may want to change your beliefs. How we define our personal beliefs depend on the phase of our life. How mature we are, how positive our environment is, and how well we mingle with our society are some of the factors that help us in defining our personal beliefs.
Relationships are one area where we can test ourselves to define our beliefs. We fall in love when we feel the other person has something in common with us. That something is the other person's personal beliefs and values. Our way of thinking and handling problems is the same. Without exchanging a word we can understand what our partner is thinking. Physical connection is impossible without mental connection. If your and the other person's minds don’t meet, your relationship won’t last for a long time. This is the main reason behind failed marriages and unfulfilled love affairs.
Your personal values and beliefs motivate you and keep you stable during the ups and downs of life. If you believe in soul mates, you will continue to control your emotions and desires until you find one. If you believe that education is the only way to make a decent living, nothing in the world will shake your resolve. Always be honest with yourself while defining personal beliefs, otherwise you will end up being confused and torn in two. Don’t allow other people to determine your beliefs and don’t change your thinking unless you are totally convinced that what you’re about to do is right.
