In today’s competitive world, we all have to work very hard if we want
to achieve something in life. Deciding which career to adopt is a
crucial decision in an individual's life and it does not come that
easy. You have to consider a lot of things before choosing a career so
that you don’t regret your decision afterwards.
Let’s find out what
career development considerations should be taken into account before
entering the professional world.
Developing a Career Plan
First of all, be a judge of your own self. Make a list of your
strengths and skill-set. In order to decide on a career direction, you
have to focus on one particular area where you specialize. Evaluate
your performance in this area and see yourself from an employer’s point
of view.
How would your strengths be a contribution towards a company’s success?
Always make sure that you shortlist those abilities of yours that have helped you achieve something in the past. It could be writing, communication skills, marketing or advertising skills, journalism or anything else. If you haven’t thought about using these skills to develop your career, do so now.
You must have heard the saying, "Always do a job you like and you will never have to work a day of your life." It is absolutely true.
You may start your career by doing something that pays a lot, but at some point in your life you start getting bored and frustrated simply because you never liked doing it in the first place. In the beginning of a career, salary or income shouldn’t be your first concern. You have to excel yourself in a particular field and slowly make your way up to the top.
Now that you have decided which direction to take, the next step is to make an attractive resume. This is the first written document your employer will look at to judge your talents. Don’t make your resume too long or descriptive. Only highlight your areas of specialization and list down your achievements and distinctions. Don’t forget to write down all projects you have done in the past and any job experiences that you have had. There are many resume templates available online. Just choose one of these and start making your resume today.
Keep yourself up-to-date about all the recent developments and advancements in your field of interest. Search on the Internet and make a habit of reading newspapers and journals on a regular basis. Be informed about the latest technologies and tools in use and try to gain some hands-on experience with them. Don’t forget to add this skill-set to your resume.
Shortlist some organizations that you think might be interested in hiring you for the services you offer. Before dropping off your resume at a particular organization, make sure you have read the job responsibilities and qualifications required for that job carefully. When you get a call for interview, prepare well before appearing for it. Try to extract some information about that company and make notes. Pay extra attention to the way you dress up. Be confident and relaxed. Do not lie about anything while answering the questions.
If you get the job, work in that organization wholeheartedly for a year or two before applying in some other bigger and reputable organization. By that time, you would have learned a lot about organizational setup and how to move in the professional world, and it would be much easier to get a better job to further develop your career.
